If it's true that cats have nine lives, then Jack has only eight of them left.

The two-year-old moggy was left fighting for his life after being shot with a pellet gun in the latest sickening attack on animals near Wolverhampton.

Vets have been left astounded that Jack survived the sniper attack in Codsall after being shot through the shoulder. It missed his ribs, vital organs and arteries before lodging near his diaphragm. Owners Maria and Adrian Jeavons rushed Jack to the vets in Wolverhampton after he slumped in agony.

"He is usually a really lively cat and so we knew something was wrong immediately," said 33-year-old Adrian from Birches Park Road.

"We had let him out in the morning and he didn't come back all day which was really odd for him.

"I could see blood on his shoulder but didn't know what had happened. As soon as I tried to pick him up he went mad so we rushed him to the emergency vets.

"At first he didn't think he'd been shot but we had to leave him there overnight and the X-rays showed the pellet.

"The vet said it is incredible that he survived.

"They said it is more dangerous to remove the pellet at the moment so we are hoping it moves. It is still very worrying."

Adrian said it was "sick" that pellet guns were being used to target animals.

"Just a week before this happened we had been sitting in the garden and heard two loud bangs and knew it was pellet guns being fired.

"I don't know why someone would do it. It just doesn't make sense at all."

The attack happened at around 11pm on Sunday Aug 26.

The case is the latest in a string of attacks on animals.

Animals were put at risk during two arson attacks at Essington Fruit Farm earlier this year and the village was left shocked when yobs slashed a horse.
