A car and a lorry were in collision on the northbound carriageway of the motorway close to Norton Canes services yesterday.

Staffordshire Ambulance Service scrambled two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and an emergency doctor to the incident, and West Midlands Ambulance Service sent the County Air Ambulance from RAF Cosford, near Wolverhampton.

A spokesman for the West Midlands service said: "When ambulance crews arrived at the scene they found a 4x4 vehicle had overturned after being in collision with a lorry.

"A 12-year-old boy was discovered outside of the 4x4 vehicle though how he came to be there is not known. The crews worked extremely hard to stabilise his condition before he was airlifted with head, neck and back injuries to the specialist paediatric services at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

"The boy's father was taken by land ambulance to Staffordshire General Hospital with a shoulder injury. A third casualty was taken to the same hospital for assessment." The lorry driver is not believed to have been hurt.
