Baths have to be shut again

The fun pool at a Stourbridge leisure centre has been closed for the fifth time in just 12 months, leaving scores of would-be swimmers high and dry.

Swimmers were turned away from pool unaware it had closed for a week for maintenance work.

The fun pool at the Crystal Leisure Centre in Bell Street was closed yesterday to put a new gel coating on the two slides.

And the adjacent 25 metre pool was also closed because of the fumes produced by the work. Both will re-open on Saturday.

It is the fifth closure in the past 12 months for work to be carried out.

But parents and their toddlers unaware of the closure turned up in steady streams yesterday and had to be turned away.

In the end staff were forced to pin up a large handwritten sign in pink pen outside the centre telling passers-by the baths were closed.

There had previously only been a small sign inside.

Dudley Council spokesman Chris Howes said: "This is essential maintenance work. We apologise for the inconvenience.

"Signs have been up at the leisure centre for the past two weeks, warning about the closure well in advance. Information has also been placed on our website."
