Motorists have been warned to avoid the area around the venue with some of the worst jams in the event's history expected over the weekend and miles of tailbacks this afternoon.

Some drivers reported being stuck in traffic for more than four hours as thousands of music fans attempted to get on site.

The M54 and M6 were also heavily congested.

One festival-goer, Ben Edwards, said his friends had been stuck in traffic for more than three hours attempting to get from Willenhall to the event at Weston-under-Lizard.

He said: "We cut through Featherstone and thankfully it seemed to work because it only took us an hour to get there after setting off at 11am this morning. Our friends took the main roads which took more than three hours."

Office worker Chris Leggett, aged 31, from Lichfield, this afternoon estimated the queue from Weston Park back to Junction 1 of the M54 at Featherstone was around 7.5 miles.

Police have closed several roads to avoid revellers clogging up the country lanes.

More than 80,000 people have snapped up tickets for the sell-out event, with ticketless fans travelling from as far as Manchester in the hope of buying some.

Stewards will stop festival-goers travelling through Tong and along Beighton Lane, Old Chester Road and Mill Lane. The Staffordshire Police helicopter will be watching over revellers, and officers will be checking the number plate of every vehicle entering the grounds.
