The attraction unveiled its £6.7million extension in March. It has enjoyed its highest ever visitor figures during July since records were started in 1995.

A total of 15,754 people flocked to the gallery last month, including a number of international visitors.

Staff have noticed an exhibition by a Korean artist has caught the imaginations of visitors from South Asia as well as an official from the South Korean embassy.

The star summer show Welcome' by South Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa, has further boosted the bumper figures, say delighted bosses.

Marketing officer Jenny Parkins said: "A Mr Choi from the cultural section of the Korean embassy came up from London for a private view. The exhibition's curator Kate Prior was also approached at the International Festival of the Image in Birmingham by South Korean artists and photographers, so the word is getting out there and Wolverhampton is being put on the map."

Zoe Papiernik, head of marketing and operations added: "It is fantastic to see the public really embracing the art gallery in its first summer since the new extension. The exhibitions have also been really well-received and with Choi Jeong Hwa taking over the gallery inside and out, loads of people come to see the rest of the exhibition."

Pop Art emerged in the mid-1950s in Britain and uses techniques drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising and comics.

On Saturday, a family fun day will be held from 12 noon to 4pm to celebrate the opening of a new exhibition with hands on activities and multi-lingual story telling.
