An office worker found the 19-year-old woman slumped on grass in Waterfront Way at 6am, just yards from offices and bars.

Police launched an investigation and sealed off the entire road, along with a stretch of Stourbridge Road.

Rush hour traffic was brought to a virtual standstill while forensic experts scoured the scene for potential clues.

Large numbers of employees gathered on the streets, with workplaces including Travelodge, Dreamworld Furniture and Intercontinental Hotel Group among the business affected as the area was sealed off.

Jason Priest, who works at Friar Tuck's Cafe in Stourbridge Road, said: "There's been hundreds of office workers out here all morning. Nobody can get into work and the police aren't telling anyone what's happened."

Workers caught up in today's chaos said they had heard rumours that there had been an all night party in flats nearby.

A shopkeeper near to where the teenager was found said a man had come into his store shortly before 6am today, saying he was looking for his girlfriend. He was hysterical," he said.

"He was just saying his girlfriend had disappeared and he couldn't find her. He said she had had an argument with some other bloke there and he hadn't seen her since. I phoned the police and they came and sealed off the roads a little bit later."

Police spokeswoman Jaspreet Jagder said: "As a precautionary measure, roads in the vicinity were closed and police are trying to ascertain whether any crime has been committed."
