Meet Sheroo, a three-year-old Neapolitan Mastiff who belongs to Tarlochan Singh Bhopari, from Dudley Road, Blakenhall.

The pure-bred giant is a big softy at heart and Mr Singh reckons he may one day tip the scales at more than 20 stone beating the Lincolnshire giant featured in the Express and Star on Tuesday.

Mr Singh, aged 52, says Sheroo is currently 19st 7lb – half a stone heavier than his brother Toby – and stands at almost 6ft. He compared the size of Sheroo's paws to those of a lion and said his own head could fit into his mouth.

"I actually tried it once," said Mr Singh. "But I wasn't scared. The dogs are pedigree and really good-natured. They are excellent guard dogs and will not let anyone in but are fantastic with me. They are like my children and that is how I treat them."

Mr Singh said he hopes a final growth sees Sheroo become the world's biggest largest canine.

He added: "He will carry on growing for a while yet. He is a really big dog and the vet says he has not reached his full size. Mind you, it is quite a job getting them both in the car to take them there.

"I knew they would be big dogs but I am surprised at quite how big they have become. Everyone who sees them says they are the biggest they have ever seen."

In height, at least, Sheroo still has a way to go to surpass Samson, a cross between a Great Dane and a Newfoundland, who is a whopping 6ft 5in on his hind legs and weighs an incredible 19 stone 10lbs.

Sheroo is the Punjabi word for tiger. Mr Singh added: "I would say he is not far off the size of one."
