Farmers in the Cannock Chase area are being urged by the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group to find out more about cash help which can be used to make their farms more environmentally friendly.

The group is an environmental charity and is raising awareness of a new Environmental Stewardship grant.

The scheme will offer farmers a financial contribution aimed at helping them sustain and enhance wildlife habitats and the local landscape – as well as protecting historical farmland features.

It will provide funding for farmers to undertake measures such as pond creation, hedgerow and tree planting and for the management of farmland to benefit wildlife.

The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs launched the Environmental Stewardship grant in March 2005.

Chris Seabridge from the FWAG group said: "Through funding from the Countryside Agency and local auth-orities, the Staffordshire branch of FWAG can help farmers and landowners within the Cannock area who may benefit from farm conservation advice."

FWAG are hoping to hear from farmers and landowners within the area who may be interested in receiving a farm conservation visit.
