Widow's joy over lost photo

Memories of the past have been brought flooding back for one Express & Star reader, who has been reunited with a treasured family photograph taken nearly 60 years ago.

The newspaper printed a copy of the old portrait after it was discovered on the pavement in Showell Circus, Low Hill, Wolverhampton.

And when Doreen Halford, from Sedgley, opened her copy she couldn't believe her eyes as she saw her late husband Les, mother-in-law Susannah, brother-in-law Robert and his wife Irene staring back at her.

The photograph was taken when Les was aged 15 – and just months before he and Doreen met.

Popular Les, who ran numerous chip shops across the region including Halfords in Wombourne, died last year at the age of 72. Doreen said: "I knew who it was straight away and I couldn't believe it. It was a big shock. It has brought so many memories flooding back.

"I have just been going through so many years in my head looking at the picture.

"So many people knew Les but they probably wouldn't recognise him from that photo because he is so young and has hair.

"It is so lovely that someone would be so thoughtful to pick up the photograph and try to find who it belonged to.

"I have a theory as to why the photograph ended up where it did.

"Les came from a big family and his sister, Phoebe, had lots and lots of family photographs.

"When she died it was left to her son to clean her flat and I think he lives in that area so it may have got lost on his travels.

"It is not actually my photograph and I will willingly give it back to whoever it belongs to.

"If they don't get in touch then I will keep it and treasure it."
