Students from Old Swinford Hospital School, Stourbridge, were whisked to a plush Birmingham hotel from the school grounds last night in a converted fire engine.

The engine, which is available to hire for all sorts of occasions, is decked out with tinted windows, luxury seating. mood lighting and its own sound system.

Shaun Barrows, from Halesowen and his classmates Sophie James, of Wolverhampton, Lydia Bregman, of Stourbridge, Ben Hayes, of Shropshire, Will Stirk, of Bridgnorth, Will Porter, of Hertfordshire, Tom Lavender, of Market Drayton, and Kay McAllister of Northamptonshire, all jumped on board.

The teenagers are all heading off to university after their exams and were celebrating with more than 100 other students at the school's leavers ball at the Burlington Hotel in Birmingham.

Shaun said: "Some of us have been at the school for seven years now and have formed very close friendships, so it was an emotional night.

"We wanted to do something a bit different.

"The classic limo has been done so we opted for the fire engine instead which was a bit of fun and not something you do everyday."
