Council bosses are currently in talks with a major developer to regenerate the Market Hall and Church Street area of the town centre.

As part of the plans the Prince of Wales Centre, Cannock's ageing multi-storey car park and the market hall could be demolished and replaced with a brand new retail complex bringing new jobs and businesses.

Council leader Councillor Neil Stanley confirmed the talks were taking place but he would not reveal the name of the companies involved for fear of putting the deal at risk.

The council has been exploring a regeneration plan for the eastern side of Cannock town centre for some years and in February 2004, the council announced its intention to seek a development partner.

The scheme is likely to mirror the regeneration project in Hednesford where the council signed a deal with St Modwen who then took on the project in a private capacity. Council leader Neil Stanley said:

"Obviously I can't reveal any names at the moment because talks are on-going and I wouldn't want to jeopardise that but we are hopeful." A feasibility study has already been carried out to come up with a masterplan for the regeneration of Church Street and Market Hall.
