Former Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay was guest of honour at the opening of Stafford's first "Alzheimer's Cafe".

The actress, who played barmaid Shelley Unwin in the long-running soap, spoke at the launch of the cafe at The Oddfellows Hall, in Greengate Street, last night.

She is due to appear as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing as part of the Shakespeare at the Castle production which begins on June 28.

Alzheimer's Cafe coordinator Teresa Parsons, of the Carers Association Southern Staffordshire, said the cause was close to Sally's heart as her grandmother suffered from the disease.

Sally is heavily involved with the Alzheimer's Society. Teresa said: "Sally talked about what a cruel illness Alzheimer's was. "She explained how important it was to have such a service for people with dementia, their carers and friends.

The Alzheimer's Cafe will offer two-hour monthly meetings at The Oddfellows Hall as a support network for sufferers and their families.
