New Tesco jobs boost

Tesco will open a store in Willenhall in the autumn and bosses want to fill 200 jobs from warehouse workers to check-out staff.

The firm is in the process of refurbishing the former Kwik Save, in Owen Road, and will throw open the doors of the rebranded supermarket at the beginning of September.

A series of three open days will start on Friday to recruit employees, including shelf stackers, customer service experts and a bakery team.

There has been a lot of interest in the jobs and appointments on the first day are already fully booked.

There are limited slots available for Saturday, between 9am and 6pm, and Sunday, between 10am and 3pm.

Ward councillor Sean Coughlan said the jobs were good news but he was disappointed Tesco was setting up shop on the outskirts of the town.

"At the moment we are working hard to try and regenerate Willenhall town centre and this development is at odds with that aim," he said.

"Anything that draws investment out of town does not benefit the heart of an area. Tesco is such a dominant force in the market and we can't compete with the money it has to promote and advertise its position on the outskirts."

Around 170 Kwik Save stores were sold last year, while others became Somerfield.

The open days will be held at Tesco Recruitment Centre, Isis House, Smith Road, Wednesbury. Call 0121 506 4277 to make an appointment.
