The band will be at the castle on September 2. Nearly 1,000 tickets sold out in a few hours after being put up for sale on the internet last month.

And another 1,500 have been shifted by Stourbridge-based organisers Factory 5 Promotions.

Factory 5 director Dave Bennett said: "We are absolutely astounded at the response.

"It has been amazing. We thought it would be popular but this has surpassed all expectations. Status Quo are legends, and I think everyone wants to be at what will be a really cracking night in the grounds of Dudley Castle." Factory 5 has also now confirmed the support acts for the concert on September 2.

Bands taking to the stage before Status Quo will be Dr and The Medics, famous for their version of the song Spirit in the Sky, and US hillbilly rockers Hayseed Dixie, who cover well-known classic rock songs in a hillbilly style.

Gates open at 5pm, and Status Quo are due on stage at 9pm.

Factory 5 is organising a string of big name concerts at the castle. Opera singer Katherine Jenkins will be at the castle for the first event on June 9, with tickets still available via the Midland Box Office on 0870 3207000. They cost between £25 and £40 for fans wanting to be closer to the stage.

Tickets for Status Quo are available only via the Factory 5 website and not the Midland Box Office.

The ticket website is at www.factory5 events.com or www.factory-5events.co.uk

More big names are due to announced later this week for 2008.
