Nikkita Williams was injured at Gorse Farm, Lazy Hill Road, Aldridge.

She was mounting her horse, Ruby, ahead of a ride with about six other riders when it bolted backwards at about 9.10am on Saturday.

The Brownhills Comprehensive pupil, due to sit her GCSE exams, was knocked to the floor and suffered significant head injuries.

The air ambulance took her to Selly Oak Hospital but she was later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Her parents, Dave and Marge, are believed to have been at her bedside.

Val Cooper, who runs Gorse Farm where Nikkita keeps her horse, said Ruby started to run backwards and as Nikkita tumbled her head hit the floor. She added: "Nikkita is absolutely horse-mad and is such a hard-working girl. She comes almost every day and helps me out around the stables.

"She just wants to work with horses. Unfortunately horses are unpredictable and it was a complete accident what happened."
