Now police have warned local people to be on their guard against suspicious callers and opportunist bogus officials after the incident yesterday.

The man and a woman called at the pensioner's home on Maple Crescent at around 11.30am yesterday where they claimed they were from the district council.

The duo cut the hedges before charging the man for the work. They then gained entry to the house and after they had left, the elderly man found a small amount of money was missing.

Officers are asking residents to be vigilant and watch out for the bogus callers. The woman is white, aged between 40 and 50, with dark short straight hair. She has two front teeth missing and is short and plump. She was wearing a pinafore dress, talked with a local accent and walked with a slight stoop.

The man is described as white and about 35 to 45, with short brown hair. He is well-built and was wearing a brown leather coat.

He also had a local accent. The pair left the address in a yellow van. Witnesses should call Det Sgt Neil Poultney on 08453 302010 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
