Woman made up attack

A woman injured close to a Cannock town centre park was not the victim of a violent attack but was involved in an accident on her way home from a night out, police revealed today.
The girl initially told police she was attacked and it was thought she was the victim of an attempted robbery. Cannock Park was sealed off while a team of police officers investigated.
But detectives today said the 20-year-old girl had now withdrawn her statement and that the minor injuries to her face were the result of an accident.
Det Sgt Chris Buxton, from Watling Street CID, said: "No further action is being taken out against the woman. We want to emphasise to residents in the area that there is no cause for concern." The girl told police she was assaulted at the park entrance closest to the town centre in Stafford Road at around midnight on Wednesday.
