The site of an eyesore garage in Merridale Lane has been transformed, with the creation of a £3.2 million centre, complete with theatre and gallery.

The two-storey block has the latest hi-tech lighting, sound and art equipment, and will host student productions and art exhibitions.

Formerly a car showroom for Brindley Motors, the building had been empty for three years before the school bought it last spring. It has since been flattened to allow the school to extend its premises from Compton Road.

Headteacher Dr Bernard Trafford said the new facility was a fantastic addition for the school.

"Our arts and drama department has always produced work of a high standard but the facilities the students were having to work in has always let them down. I have been head at the school for many years and I have always known that we would need new facilities since I have been here. This piece of land was ideal and I am so pleased with how it has turned out.

"The arts students are already using some of the building and it was wonderful to see them working in such great surroundings. If any building can provide inspiration to improve their creativity then it is this one.

School spokesman Kris Griffin said: "We have such a great history with art and drama at the school and this is going to make it even better."
