Sheila Middleton was standing behind the Peugeot 106 helping her husband Keith, aged 81, reverse when the accident happened at 10.15am yesterday.

Mrs Middleton was pinned under the car.

Mr Middleton, who recently underwent a triple-heart bypass, rushed to neighbours for help as his wife, 78, lay screaming. Neighbours Mark Fidoe his wife Amanda and Paul Roberts raced to the scene in The Green to help.

Mr Fidoe and Mr Roberts managed to lift the car just enough for Mrs Fidoe to pull Mrs Middleton clear.

Paramedics called for the county air ambulance and Mrs Middleton was flown to Selly Oak Hospital, but she died during an emergency operation yesterday.

Mr Fidoe, an engineer, said: "We ran down and saw Sheila under the car. Keith was just standing shaking and saying 'I've run her over. I've run her over.'"
