The young woman suffered back and neck injuries.

The accident happened at Junction 11 of the M6, at Laney Green, as the car came off the motorway to go along the A460 to Cannock.

The passenger's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Fire crews, an ambulance and police were scrambled to the scene at about 12.15am yesterday.

A Staffordshire Fire Service spokesman said the car slid off the road, colliding with the central barrier.

"The young man driving the car was out of the vehicle when we arrived but the young woman passenger was complaining of back and neck pain, so we had to cut the roof off the car to get her out," he said.

She was taken to Staffordshire General Hospital for treatment but the man was not believed to be hurt.
