Grenadier Guardsman Simon Davison, 22, died protecting his fellow soldiers at a checkpoint in the dangerous area of Helmand Province on May 3.

Now his sister Caroline, aged 28, and his mother Maureen, of Oriel Close in Cannock, have said they are pleased that the Ministry of Defence will hold an investigation into what happened.

"We are happy that they will be having an inquiry," said Caroline. "Hopefully that will help the army to learn from what has happened and that could help protect other soldiers."

Caroline and her mum are preparing to say their final farewell to Simon who they described as a "brilliant" son and a "free spirit."

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed an inquiry will be held into Simon's death. It is understood an inquest will be conducted into Simon's death at a later stage after the inquiry has released its findings which is not expected until August.

Simon will be laid to rest at a funeral on Tuesday at 9.30am at St Mary's Church in Cannock.
