The tranquil oasis features water pools, an alpine garden, mixed borders, a huge variety of shrubs and shade planting under oak trees.

A selection of beautiful mini gunnera plants and clematis add to the riot of colour in the haven which has given its creator Barbara Phillips a lifetime of pleasure.

Now Mrs Phillips is hoping her stunning garden at Wolverley near Kidderminster will bring pennies from heaven when she invites the public in to raise funds for a new church building.

Mrs Phillips has spent the last year working hard to get her one acre garden at Cedar Lodge, Blakeshall, into pristine condition for Sunday's open day from 2pm to 5.30pm.

She is helped by her husband Malcolm who tends the lawns while she cares for the plants and takes care of the weeding and other tasks around the borders.

The garden featured on BBC2's Ultimate Garden show in 2004 and Sunday will be the last time Mrs Phillips opens to the public.

After toiling away for 40 years, Mrs Phillips has decided to call time on showing off her pride and joy.

Sunday's event hopes to raise funds for the new annex at Baxter Church in Kidderminster where Mrs Phillips regularly worships.

Church parishioners are trying to raise £70,000 for the annex which will feature a book shop, cafe, archive service and internet facilities for multiple community use. Barclays Bank in Kidderminster has pledged to match every pound raised by parishioners as an extra incentive.

Mrs Phillips said: "My garden has been described as one of the most beautiful in the Wyre Forest district and I am very proud of it.

"But after 40 years, it's the last time I will show it off. It's just too much work for me now.

"I hope people appreciate it and we're expecting a good number of visitors on Sunday."

Entrance is £2.50 per person and cream teas will also be available.
