An armed robber wearing a red devil mask escaped with hundreds of pounds after targeting a Pizza Hut in Blackheath.

The thief struck at the takeaway in Blackheath High Street at around 7.15 last night.

Police with dogs were called to the branch, which is at the top of the High Street.

Insp Karen Hanson, of Smethwick police said: "There was a robbery of approximately £250-£300.

"Nobody was injured but there was a suggestion that he had a weapon, although nothing was actually seen."

Police spokesman Steve Geary added: "He ordered staff to lie on the floor after threatening them with what is believed to be a handgun.

"The offender then ran off along the High Street with a small quantity of cash he had stuffed in a Pizza Hut box."

He is described as white, about 25, stocky and with mousey coloured hair. He was wearing a full red-faced devil mask.

Today the takeaway was open as normal, but the manager declined to comment on the incident.
