A redundant carpet factory in Kidderminster could be knocked down to make way for multi-million pound new homes scheme which has won the backing of residents.

Miller Homes West Midlands Ltd wants to transform the 2.4 acre industrial site in Franchise Street into a complex made up of 16 three-bed and four four-bed homes.

There are also plans for 64 two-bed apartments and 24 affordable homes would be built for people on a low income.

The rubbish-strewn site of the former Quayle Carpets factory, next to Kidderminster General Hospital, has been the subject of a newsletter sent out to more than 500 residents in February, encouraging them to have their say on proposals.

A total of 76 people replied, with 71 per cent giving the scheme the thumbs up.

One resident welcomed the chance to clean up the area, saying that the site had become a disgrace and littered with rubbish.

But objectors have expressed concerns about an increase of traffic, problems finding parking spaces and the possibility of their homes being overlooked and have suggested measures to slow down traffic should be included in the design.

Meanwhile developers hope the complex will transform the neglected former factory site into a buzzing residential area.

Part of the application states: "It will bring a high level of architectural design into an area of no distinct character or architectural merit, breathing life back into a vacant site through beneficial use."

If the application is successful Miller Homes have proposed to make a financial contribution to improve educational facilities in the area, along with a £55,000 donation to develop public open spaces and just under £3,000 for transport improvements.

The application is due to go a Wyre Forest District Council's planning meeting on May 17.
