Builder in rescue drama
An unlucky builder got stuck down a hole after falling and bursting open a raw sewage pipe at a site in the Black Country.
The County Air Ambulance was called to the dramatic rescue of the 44-year-old, who suffered severe injuries to his leg.
The worker became wedged in the 7ft-deep ditch near Stourbridge Golf Course, in Racecourse Lane, Stourbridge.
Firefighters managed to haul the man out before he was airlifted to a specialist unit at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham in case the raw sewage had caused an infection.
Ambulance staff also feared there may be a need for plastic surgery, due to the deep cut to the builder's thigh.
Martin Eaton, paramedic incident support officer, said the rescue at around 4.30pm yesterday had been a good team effort from emergency crews.
"The man had slipped into the hole, fracturing a sewerage pipe as he landed," he said. "He suffered quite a deep laceration to his thigh. We are grateful to the care taken by the Fire and Rescue Service. The patient was taken to the golf course by land ambulance and transferred to the helicopter." It is believed the man did not suffer infection.
