Binmen have new rules on food

Food waste will be collected every week from homes in the Cannock Chase district under changes to the council's recycling scheme which come into force today.

The fortnightly bin collection proved extremely controversial and led to complaints last summer about problems with maggots.

Officials are now rolling out changes that allow families to put food waste in both their green bin – meant for general waste – and the brown bin which, until this week, was restricted to containing garden rubbish.

It gives families the flexibility to decide which bin to put food waste in so they are not forced to leave it sitting in bins for up to two weeks.

Cardboard can also now be put into the brown bins under the changes.

Thousands of leaflets were delivered to homes in Cannock and Rugeley last week to let residents know about the changes.

A free five-litre kitchen caddy is available from Cannock Chase District Council to make it more convenient for families to put food waste inside. They can be collected from the civic centre in Beecroft Road, Cannock, or the Rugeley area office.

Food waste includes vegetable peelings, eggshells, teabags, meat and fish carcasses and other leftovers.
