A Wolverhampton worker has today hailed a hero after he desperately tried to stop thieves armed with sledgehammers steal two rare Faberge eggs.
The eggs were among a haul worth £250,000 from a jewellery shop.
Tony Harley was travelling through Cardiff city centre when he spotted raiders attempting to flee Cliver Ranger jewellers in their getaway car.
The safe installer said: "I pulled the van in front of the car so he couldn't drive off. I was just trying to get my camera on my phone to take a picture.
"They all bundled into the car and he couldn't move off. So I tried to keep him where he was but he just went up the kerb and was driving along the pavement."Two men wearing balaclavas smashed the window of the shop at 10.30am yesterday before grabbing the jewels from the display.
Staff had only just put them on display when the raid happened. The getaway car, which was stolen was found burnt out several miles away.
The most distinctive items taken are two Faberge eggs - modern versions of the jewel-encrusted ornaments that were created for the Russian Tsars. Manager of the shop Carl Parry said he was grateful for Mr Harley's intervention.
