Private Michelle Norris is the first woman to receive the accolade after displaying extraordinary bravery on one of her first missions. The 19-year-old, of Amblecote, Stourbridge, was accompanied to the ceremony today by her parents. Pte Norris, who serves in the Royal Armoured Medical Corps, was fresh out of training when her regiment was assigned to support the Iraqi Security Forces in Al Amarah. Pte Norris, who serves in the Royal Armoured Medical Corps, was fresh out of training when her regiment was assigned to support the Iraqi Security Forces in Al Amarah.She rescued her commanding officer after he was struck by sniper fire.
One bullet went through her rucksack.
Her mother Susan today said: "We are all very proud of Michelle and this ceremony will be something very special for her."
Michelle also picked up an Express & Star Local Heroes Award at the end of last year.
