Officers say they "urgently" want to speak to 62-year-old Harold James Ingram following the murder of Diane Ingram yesterday.
Mrs Ingram was found dead at her groundfloor flat in Avon Road on Tuesday evening. She had been stabbed in the neck.
Detectives have issued a photograph of Mr Ingram, known as 'Jim', in the hope of tracing his whereabouts.
Mr Ingram, of Don Grove, was last seen on a bus in Walsall Road, Cannock, at around 3.20pm on Tuesday.
The bus is believed to be the 870 Cannock to Wolverhampton service. Neighbour Iris Owen, aged 85, said she last saw him on Tuesday when he asked her to give some keys to his son.
She said: "He came here, gave me his keys and said 'give these to Matty'. I asked him what was wrong and he left."
Mr Ingram is described as white, around 5ft 7ins tall and of medium build. He walks with a distinctive stoop and has unkempt short, greying brown hair.
He may have been wearing either a dark blue waist-length padded jacket with diagonal light-coloured strips on the arm, or a blue denim jacket, and jeans. He may have been carrying a Marks & Spencer bag.
Detective Inspector Ronnie Walker said: "We are following up several of lines of inquiry into Diane's tragic death."
