The 150 slimmers gave up food treats to lose the weight in just a month and raise £1,200 for Zak Macefield whose condition affects just 17 people in the country.

He can't sit up or speak and has a feeding tube inserted in his stomach.

The idea for the slimathon came from Sue Rollason who runs classes including one at Cotwall End Primary School which Zak's mum Kerry attends.

She was one of several slimmers ranging from their 20s to 80s who managed to drop a stone.

And it was one of the few male members, Brian Dee, who collected the most sponsorship raising £200.

Mrs Rollason said: "I know Zak's mum but had no idea how poorly he was until I read about him in the Express & Star.

"A lot of members had read about him and so when I suggested the idea of a sponsored slim people were really enthusiastic.

"Kerry brought Zak in to meet the groups and talk about his condition.

"Knowing every pound they lost would help Zak was definitely an incentive as during February people did not lose so much weight.

"I would like to say a big thank you and a big well done to all those who got involved."

Mrs Macefield said she was thrilled with the fundraising and also said anyone who wanted information about Kabuki syndrome could call her on 01902 884261.

Mrs Rollason who works in the finance department of Mitchells and Butlers brewery said her colleagues also started calorie counting to help notch up funds boosting the final total to £1,320.

She runs three slimming groups with a total of 300 members and her groups also meet at Zoar Methodist Church in Lower Gornal and Dudley Central Methodist Church.

Once a size 22 Mrs Rollason lost more than four stones in six months and was inspired by her own success to set up the classes.
