A call has been made to regenerate a former factory site on the Kidderminster and Stourport border which has been standing empty for several years.

Stourport town councillor David Little says more must be done to market the old National Standard factory which he branded an eyesore.

The former factory in Walter Nash Road used to employ around 1,000 staff producing industrial wire for nationwide distribution.

Romwire took over the premises and later closed down around 2003 before relocating to Staffordshire.

Councillor Little says the building is ideal land for industrial units.

The leader of Stourport town council's Conservative party said: "The building is an eyesore and has been lying empty for far too long.

"It's prone to vandalism and attracts the wrong sort of attention. It is a huge site which would be ideal for small industrial units. It's a blot on the landscape.

"It is in a prime location and would provide much needed jobs for the area."

The cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Stephen Clee said: "I think people are waiting to see what happens with the British Sugar site redevelopment. It could act as a catalyst for the area once somebody takes it over."
