A Kidderminster man was punched and kicked and later died after he tried to "sort out" someone who hit his friend during a pool game, a jury was told.
Martin Yarranton, aged 44, asked Gavin Tilling to step outside into the car park of the Wrens Nest pub in Stourport Road, Kidderminster.
He had been watching England's World Cup win over Paraguay at the Park Inn before arriving at the pub to confront Tilling at 9pm on June 10.
Worcester Crown Court heard yesterday how Mr Yarranton, of Broome Crescent, wanted to speak to Tilling about him hitting his friend Richard Johnson in the pub a few weeks earlier.
Mr Robert Juckes QC, prosecuting, said that on May 20, Mr Johnson beat Tilling at pool. Tilling, 28, accused him of saying something about him before striking him to the ground.
On June 10, Mr Yarranton, whose uncle Gordon Yarranton is a councillor, went to the pub and confronted Tilling, the court heard. Yarranton pushed Tilling about and was then knocked him to the ground.
Tilling, of Walton Close, Birchen Coppice, continued to attack Mr Yarranton, and left him with fatal injuries.
Tilling denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.
The trial continues.
