Currently motorists parking in the district have to pay until 6pm but councillors are expected to approve plans to extend the scheme at a meeting tonight.
Exact details will be decided at a later date but the Express & Star understands hours could be extended to include early mornings and evenings.
This will bring in an estimated £7,500 in 2007/8 rising to £10,000 in 2008/9 and 2009/10.
The extension of car parking hours will come as the district sees the third rise in car parking charges across the district.
In April motorists will have to pay an extra 10p an hour. This is the third rise in four years after parking charges were frozen in 2006.
Critics of the scheme claim the extra cost of coming into the district will put off some visitors and could ultimately damage the night time economy of Cannock.
Councillor Danny Davies, cabinet member for environment, said: "The car parking charges are reasonable, they are not extortionate and people are only paying for the time they spend in the town and I don't think anyone will find that an undue cost."
