They struck at St Mary's and All Saints Church in Churchfields.
Around 100 metres of lead flashing was discovered missing from various parts of the building's roof.
The haul included material that had only recently been replaced following a theft of lead from the roof of the nave last year.A church spokesman said that the cost of replacing the lead stolen at the weekend and stonework damaged by thieves would total between £8,000 and £10,000. The thieves struck between 3.30pm on Sunday and Monday morning.
Community Support Officer for Broadwaters Richard Greybanks said that a vehicle the size of a transit van or pick-up truck would have been required to remove what was a "substantial amount of lead".
He said: "It is quite possible that someone driving past the Ring Road might have seen a vehicle parked there.
"We would also like to speak to anyone who saw activity on the roof or around the church on Sunday afternoon or who has been offered lead for sale. The thieves must have been there for a considerable amount of time."
