The English Heritage grant, supported by the Wolfson Foundation, is one of 24 to cathedrals across England and is part of a £6 million scheme to support some of the nation's most important buildings.
Further grants totalling nearly a quarter of a million pounds will go to assist with masonry repairs at Hereford and Worcester cathedrals and to repair leaded light windows at Coventry Cathedral.Between 1991 and 2001, English Heritage committed more than £900,000 towards carrying out major structural works to Lichfield Cathedral but urgent repairs to the fabric of the building are still needed.
Alan Taylor, inspector of historic buildings for the West Midlands, said: "Even in our uncertain and often cynical age, cathedrals still have the ability to bring us to our knees with awe, just as the masons and craftspeople who created them centuries ago intended.
Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral said: "We are delighted and very grateful to English Heritage for their ongoing support which is invaluable. The award will enable us to continue our programme of maintenance and repair."
