Major routes including the M5 and M6 were gridlocked for up to 15 miles as the miserable weather added hours to normal journey times and saw Birmingham Airport closed, buses cancelled and trams terminated before Wolverhampton city centre. Cars were abandoned all across the Black Country, including around the Merry Hill centre in Dudley, as stranded drivers gave up and either walked home, returned to their offices or booked into hotels.
