Drivers will be facing 18 months of roadworks misery when slip roads on the M6 Toll road are closed for essential repair work to be carried out.

The work is due to start next month and the Staffordshire junctions will be affected at different stages over the period.

It will add to the traffic problems caused by roadworks currently under way on the M6 in the Cannock area.

Slip roads on the M6 Toll will be closed between 9pm and 6am for routine maintenance and repair works to the road surface.

A temporary traffic prohibition order has been issued by the Highways Agency to close any slip road between junction T1, at the junction with the M42 in Warwickshire, and Junction T8 at Laney Green, near Cannock, and to allow traffic to run along the motorway's hard shoulder.

The order is expected to come into effect on February 9 with work scheduled to begin from February 12 and will last for 18 months. Emergency vehicles will be exempt from the roadworks.

This work comes as the M6 near Cannock is undergoing a £5.5 million resurfacing project which is causing disruption to commuters and is expected to last until April.

Work on the motorway will see a new safety barrier installed down the centre of the motorway with a new quieter road surface to reduce noise and spray.

The work has seen a 40mph average speed limit imposed on all six lanes of the M6 between junctions 12 and 13, in the Cannock and Stafford area.

Bosses at the Highways Agency claim the concrete barrier will improve safety on the motorway and reduce maintenance related congestion as the barriers will last as long as 50 years without repair.

According to the agency the barriers are proven to prevent vehicles from crashing through into oncoming traffic. They also do less damage to motorcyclists than a collision with the traditional steel barriers.

The current spate of roadworks on the four kilometre stretch from Penkridge to Junction 13 will last until April and follow works at Junction 12 in 2006.
