A man was attacked with an iron bar as he defended his Burntwood home from a gang of burglars who had terrified his wife.

She was alone upstairs at their Two Oaks Avenue home when the raiders broke in. She heard a noise downstairs, went to investigate and came face-to-face with them.

She managed to get out of the home and raced to find her husband, who was at a neighbour's.

He rushed back to his house, while the neighbour called police, and challenged the gang.

He tried to stop them getting into his Kia Seconda car but was hit with some type of iron bar to the head and body. He suffered cuts and bruises but declined hospital treatment.

The gang managed to escape with the car, along with cash and some watches, just before 10pm on Sunday.

Staffordshire Police spokesman Peter Stevens said: "It was a distressing experience and the couple were very shocked and traumatised."

The stolen car was later recovered in nearby Sevens Road in Chase Terrace.

Police are appealing anyone with information to call Lichfield CID on 08453 302010. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555111.
