Stafford Castle is due to re-open this weekend after being closed for more than a week to cope with tree damage caused by severe gales.

The site, off Newport Road, was shut following an incident when a woman was seriously injured by a tree which blew down in last week's strong winds.

It was closed to the general public on Thursday afternoon while an investigation began into what happened and to make sure other trees on the site were safe.

Adam Hill, head of leisure services at Stafford Borough Council, said last week's gales were the worst in 17 years.

He said today: "In agreement with Lord Stafford, we have been working to finalise work on trees at the Stafford Castle site following last week's severe storm.

"Subject to weather conditions and a final assessment of the work that has been undertaken, Stafford Castle will re-open on Saturday morning."

Grandmother Sylvia Dunne, aged 63, was walking her daughter's dog on the driveway to the castle when the tree fell on her.
