The cold snap follows the worst storms for 17 years on Thursday, which left 17 people dead across Britain.Engineers from Central Networks were brought in from other parts of the country. Despite working all night 1,200 homes in Staffordshire, 200 in the Black Country and 250 in Shropshire still had no electricity today.

Central Networks has called in engineers from Western Power Distribution (which covers the South West and South Wales) to help.

Paul Hodgetts has been without power at his house in Swindon, near Wombourne, since Thursday morning. He said: "I have been ringing the emergency number but you can't get to talk to anybody."

Express & Star weatherman John Warner said: "It's turning colder and still windy."
