Swimmers will be able to make a splash on Saturday when it becomes the first part of the complex to be showcased following the refurbishment.

Leisure chiefs say the revamp has made the centre one of the best in the country.

The 20-year-old centre has been closed since November, and the health suite is due to be re-opened when work is completed in mid-February. The centre was officially opened by the late Diana Princess of Wales in 1986 and was designed and built by Wyre Forest District Council.

The makeover scheme, funded by the council in partnership with DC Leisure Management, means visitors will be able to enjoy waterslides, a fresh modern colour scheme and bright new changing rooms.

The new-look health and fitness suite houses a sauna and steam room.

Councillor Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council cabinet member for community and leisure services said: "This is an exciting time for The Glades Leisure Centre.

"We have already had positive feedback from customers who have seen the work in progress and I am sure when the second phase is launched, the centre will be able to compete with the best leisure facilities in the country."

Stuart Booton, contracts manager at the centre, said: "The dedicated hard work of our team, working alongside the council, means we continue to provide a high quality leisure experience for the community.

"The health and fitness suite, dance studio, sports arena, squash courts, training room, sun beds and cafe and bar facilities have been open as normal during the work in November and December and we look forward to welcoming old friends as well as newcomers to the centre."
