The department is set to reopen at Kidderminster on February 14 after being been run from Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, because of a shortage of staff.

Jeff Crawshaw, executive director of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust, confirmed today that the department would be reopening next month. He said: "There are ongoing discussions to increase the use of Kidderminster Hospital and the Treatment Centre.

"We are trying to find ways of maximising theatres and wards."

His comments followed a fact-finding visit by Labour member of Worcestershire County Council and Prospective Parliamentary candidate for the Wyre Forest district, councillor Nigel Knowles who is keen to see more services returned to the town after the hospital was downgraded several years ago.

He said: "It is a very active hospital which saw 120,000 outpatients and 17,000 inpatients undergoing procedures last year.

"Other facilities include dermatology, blood test clinic, pathology, education centre and, of course, the Millbrooke Suite treating cancer patients."
