Store cash man robbed

Two robbers stole a large amount of cash from a security guard who was delivering money to a Lichfield store.

The thieves, whose faces were masked with white handkerchiefs, struck at Tesco Express in Netherstowe. They approached the delivery driver, who is aged 40 and from Stoke on Trent, outside the store yesterday, just after 1pm.

Police said they threatened the security guard, who was delivering in a van.The security guard handed over a "substantial amount of cash" and the men made off in a Mercedes car.

No weapon was seen and the security guard was not injured.

The Mercedes was abandoned and discovered around half an hour later in nearby Walkers Croft.

Lichfield inspector Mike Kozam said: "This is a serious offence that has occurred, the robbery of a person like this.

"We don't believe that any weapon was seen and the security guard was thankfully not injured.

"We have got our CID leading the investigation into this robbery and I would appeal to anyone who has got any information to contact us in confidence."

Staff at the Tesco Express store said nobody there had seen what happened. One of the robbers is described as white, around 5ft7 to 8ins tall, slim, in his mid-20s and pale.

He was wearing a light blue Bomber-style jacket and white gloves.

The other is black, also around 5ft7 to 8ins tall and in his mid-20s. He was wearing a grey hooded top.

After abandoning the Mercedes in Walkers Croft, the robbers got into another vehicle and fled the scene.

Police are eager to speak to anyone who saw them in the Walkers Croft area to get in touch.
