The geo-designed barriers, costing £130,000 were being tested for the first time.Holly Smith, spokesman for the Environment Agency, said: "This will be the first time the 300 metres of new temporary barriers have been used at Beales Corner."

She warned that at 7am today water levels were 4.02 metres in height and were expected to rise over six hours to 4.1 metres.
