Residents living in Baxter Avenue, Gilbert Scott Way and Radford Avenue complained after they were left with rotting full bin bags outside their front doors.

Last Friday commercial services chief, councillor Marcus Hart, said two extra bags of side waste would be taken up until tomorrow. After a flood of complaints the service supervisor sent refuse workers back to collect the bags this morning.

The council says binmen were confused over which bags belonged to homes. People were warned in advance of holiday arrangements. Two extra bags next to wheelie bins would be collected until tomorrow.

Marilyn Harper, aged 59, of Baxter Avenue was left with two bags. The retired teacher said: "It was just not good enough.

"We were all expecting our bin bags to be taken today and were left piling up on our doorsteps. Thank God they've seen sense and made a U-turn. Our bag was next to the bin and you could not mistake it. "

Broadwaters ward councillor Howard Martin said: "We foresaw this problem but clearly the message never got down to the shop floor. We can't have waste piling up in our streets like this. It had to be resolved as soon as possible."
