Youngsters across Lichfield spotted riding mini motorbikes illegally could have them seized and crushed, police have warned.

The warning is being issued to parents who have bought their children mini motorbikes for Christmas, and follows a number of recent complaints.

Youngsters have been spotted riding the mini motorbikes and quad bikes on housing estates and villages in the Lichfield and Tamworth areas.

And officers will act if they spot children riding the machines illegally.

Inspector Ian Coxhead, Commander of Tamworth Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "Some of these machines may well have been bought as gifts this Christmas - despite our strong advice that they are dangerous and extremely anti-social.

"People found riding them illegally face having their new possessions seized by police and sent to the crusher."

In the run up to the festive season officers expressed concern that many parents did not realise that to use the machines riders need a driving licence, insurance and a helmet.

Other restrictions relating to a vehicle's construction also apply.

"Parents may consider buying these types of presents for their children without realising they can only be used on private land and that does not include public parks, canal towpaths or any open spaces," said Insp Coxhead.

"They certainly can not be used on streets and pavements."

He added riders face being prosecuted for having no driving licence, MOT, insurance or helmet, as well as having the bikes seized.

And prosecution may also extend to parents if they allow their children to ride the machines illegally.

To report illegal mini motorbike riding call police at Lichfield on 08453 302010.
