Firefighters and paramedics worked for nearly 30 minutes to free the trapped driver from his Vauxhall Zafira after the vehicle ended up on its side following the crash in Wollescote, near Stourbridge at around 8.30am.

Smoke was also pouring out of the car.Police sealed off Wynall Lane, near the roundabout with Wynall Lane South and Oakfield Road, while the rescue operation continued with traffic diverted along nearby roads. Paramedics called for the Air Ambulance after the driver complained of severe chest pains.

The helicopter landed on nearby fields ready to take him to Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital once he was released.

Firefighters cut open one of the car's windows to get the driver out before putting him on a neck and spinal board.

Police remained at the scene to take measurements and to ensure the vehicle was safely removed.

Sgt Simon Edwards, of Stourbridge Police, said he did not believe the man's injuries to be life threatening but he had been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Shopkeeper David Walters, from the nearby Stars Newsagents, said: "When I saw the traffic outside I went out to see what was happening and could see the car on its side.

"I went to see if there was anything I could do to help but other drivers had already called an ambulance.

"I was concerned though because smoke was pouring out of part of the car.

"You could already hear the sirens in the background.

"Thankfully the driver was not more seriously injured."
