Axe-wielding ram-raiders fled with diamond and platinum rings today after crashing a car into a Wolverhampton city centre jewellers.

Three men crashed a Vauxhall Vectra into Ernest Jones, on Queen Street, at around 3.40am before smashing their way into window displays to snatch the jewellery.

They fled in the burgundy getaway car before crashing it into bollards in nearby Worcester street and fleeing.

Assistant manager Donna Fletcher-Wilson, pictured, said: "They've not really got away with anything, just a couple of things like diamond rings and platinum rings. At the end of the day, all they've done is made more work for two young girls that have had to come in at 4am.

"It's my daughter's 19th birthday today and I have not seen her yet. I hope whoever's done this doesn't have a very merry Christmas."

Acting DCI Mark Salt, of Bilston Street CID, said: "The car was used against the roller shutters and an axe has been used to smash the glass."

Anyone with information should ring Bilston Street CID on 0845 113 5000.
