The city of Lichfield and its most famous landmark came under the spotlight in a festive edition of Songs of Praise.

An average of 2.8 million viewers watched last night's Candlelit Carols from Lichfield Cathedral, with the programme peaking at the end with 3.3m viewers.

Presented by Jonathan Edwards, the programme opened with an impressive shot of the three-spired cathedral all lit up at night.

Viewers were then treated to the story of the first Christmas, told by actors Brigit Forsyth and Chris Walker, and the chance to sing along to including O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

OperaBabes sang In The Bleak Midwinter and Angelis performed O Holy Night.

The programme, along with a special one for next Easter, was recorded at the cathedral last month.

Canon Charles Taylor, the cathedral's precentor, said: "I was pleased with the outcome of the programme, and am sure others will be too. It was good for Lichfield."
