Both drivers suffered serious injuries, described at the time as potentially life threatening.

The driver of the taxi, a black Ford Focus estate, is a 43-year-old man from Cannock. The other driver is from Lichfield and aged 21.

They were both taken by ambulances to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.

Two passengers in the Primera, believed to be aged in their 20s, suffered suspected serious injuries in the collision. They were taken by ambulance to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield.

Their injuries are believed to be less serious. Police do not know whether the treacherous road conditions last night played any part.
